2. Embrace Boredom
One of the most overlooked aspects of deep work is that your brain needs to be comfortable with boredom. If you reach for your phone every time you have to wait — in a queue, at a red light, during a slow moment — you're training your mind to resist any state that isn't stimulating. This erodes concentration capacity. Practice doing nothing occasionally. It matters more than you think.
3. Ritualize the Transition
Create a consistent pre-work ritual that signals to your brain that it's time to focus. This might be making a specific drink, putting on headphones with a particular playlist, clearing your desk, or writing down the one task you're working on. Rituals reduce the friction of starting and build mental associations that make focus easier over time.
4. Set a Clear Stopping Point

5. Quit Social Media Deliberately — Don't Just Use It Less
Newport's somewhat provocative suggestion is to apply a cost-benefit analysis to every digital tool. Ask: does this platform provide enough value to justify what it costs me in attention, time, and cognitive fragmentation? The answer might surprise you.
A Simple Deep Work Framework
- Choose one task — single-tasking is non-negotiable
- Set a timer — 90 minutes is a strong starting point
- Remove all interruption vectors — phone on silent and face-down, notifications off, browser tabs closed
- Work until the timer ends — if you get stuck, stay with the discomfort rather than reaching for distraction
- Rest fully between sessions — shallow rest (scrolling) doesn't restore deep focus capacity
